Model Highlights

The Hyundai Sonata name has been a part of the American car market since its debut in 1989. Now in its fourth generation, and wearing new skin for 2009, the car offers a level of refinement usually reserved for more expensive cars.

The Sonata is offered in three separate trim levels--GLS, SE, and Limited. Each trim is available with either a 2.4L inline four-cylinder or 3.3L V6. The I4 delivers 175 horsepower (up from 162 horsepower in 2008), while the V6 puts out 249 horsepower (up from 234 horsepower). The base engine can be mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic, while the V6 comes only with a five-speed automatic. All Sonatas are front-wheel drive, and partial-zero emissions versions of the 2.4L GLS and Limited can be ordered.

The base GLS Sonata offers plenty to like, including wheels, remote keyless entry, an alarm system, cruise control, air conditioning, tilt steering, a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, an AM/FM/XM/CD stereo with MP3 capability and USB and auxiliary inputs, and power windows, locks, and heated mirrors.

The SE is the sporty model in the Sonata line. It features 17-inch alloy wheels, performance tires, a sport-tuned suspension, fog lights, chrome exhaust tips, and a rear spoiler. Also included in the SE trim is an eight-way power driver's seat, steering wheel audio controls, leather seat bolsters, chrome window moldings, and metalgrain interior accents.

In the fully equipped Limited, you'll find leather seating with two-stage heat to the front seats, eight-way power driver's seat, a power sunroof, an Infinity stereo with a six-disc CD changer, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a sliding center armrest.

A Popular Equipment Package for the GLS adds automatic headlights, woodgrain interior accents, the power driver's seat, and steering wheel audio controls. A Premium Package is available on the SE, and it features an upgraded stereo, sunroof, and auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink and compass. Optional on the Limited is a navigation system.

Despite the increased power in both engines, each offers similar fuel efficiency due to the introduction of variable induction and variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The four-cylinder returns 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway, while the V6 returns 19 mpg city/29 mpg highway.

All 2009 Hyundai Sonatas come with a bevy of standard safety features, including electronic stability and traction control, anti-lock braking, six air bags, and front active head restraints.

Pros

Stylish sedan with ample features; affordability; good blend of power and efficiency from either the 2.4L or 3.3L engines.

Model News

Hyundai's Sonata receives a mild facelift for 2009, with more changes in both the cabin and the engine bay. The front end has been revised and now features a classier look with a more upscale grille and larger headlight treatment.

Inside, both 3.5 mm and USB auxiliary jacks are new, the door trim has been revised, and the console wears a new design. The front seat heaters now have a high-low setting, and a power sunroof and dual climate control have been added as standard features to the Limited. A touch-screen navigation system is a new option.

Both of the Sonata's engines are more powerful as well. The 2.4L four-cylinder is up from 162 horsepower to 175 horsepower, while the 3.3L V6 goes from 234 horsepower to 249 horsepower. Variable induction and variable timing on the intake system are new to the base engine, while the V6 also gets a variable intake system.

Value Writeup

The subtle styling revisions to the 2009 Hyundai Sonata lend it an upscale look that distinguishes it from class rivals like the Chevrolet Malibu, Saturn Aura, and Toyota Camry. Additionally, the Sonata slots in beneath most of its competition in terms of price, and when the 2009's new features are factored into the mix, this makes it a great bargain in the midsized sedan segment.

Summary
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the crui...

Consequence
Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Summary
Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Sonata vehicles manufactured March 1, 2005, through January 21, 2010; and model year 2006-2011 Azera vehicles manufactured September 27, 2005, through November 22, 2010 originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Road salt and water can enter portions of the rear crossmember, leading to corrosion of the crossmember steel. This may lead to detachment of one of the rear control arms.

Consequence
Control arm separation may suddenly change the rear wheel alignment, affecting the handling of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will repair or replace the crossmember assembly. The recall is expected to begin by the end of September 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai Custom Care Center at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall number is 113.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to www.safercar.gov.

Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
