Value Writeup

The 2010 Honda Odyssey is still one of the top-rated minivans in the U.S., often compared to the top-rated Toyota Sienna. With ample passenger capacity, a folding third-row seat and several beverage holders, the 2010 Odyssey's design emphasizes cutting edge style, safety and clever innovation.

Safety is important to minivan buyers, so the Odyssey employs standard multiple airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, active head restraints and many other technologies intended to keep passengers safe. The Honda Odyssey won a 2010 Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and it has earned five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for both frontal and side impact crashes.

Model News

Redesigned in 2005, the Odyssey soldiers on for 2010, largely unchanged, though there are some very minor interior and exterior styling changes. New colors for 2010 include Alabaster Silver, Crystal Black Pearl and Polished Metal Metallic.

Pros

A practical and popular minivan; interior comfort and versatility; powerful V6 engine; strong acceleration and handling

Model Highlights

The 2010 Honda Odyssey comes in four basic trims: the base LX, the mid-range EX and the luxury Touring trim.

The Odyssey comes equipped with a 3.5L V6 VTEC engine that makes 244 horsepower and 240 foot-pounds of torque. For the EX-L and Touring, the same engine is standard, but also includes Variable Cylinder Management, which shuts down half of its cylinders when coasting or cruising at a low speeds. The V6 engine with VCM is slightly more powerful, rated at 244 horsepower and 245 foot-pounds of torque. All are mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The front suspension uses MacPherson Struts and the rear suspension is a multi-link double wishbone.

All trims include many standard safety features, including stability control, which Honda calls Vehicle Stability Assist, 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, dual driver's and front passenger front airbags; front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); 3-row side-curtain airbags with a rollover sensors; active front seat head restraints and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle.

Standard features on the base LX include front and rear air conditioning, keyless entry, a tilt and telescopic steering column, cruise control, power windows and doors, AM/FM/CD stereo system with four speakers and auxiliary audio input jack.

The EX adds as standard, 3-zone automatic climate control, heated mirrors, an 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar support, power sliding doors, 6-CD changer with six speakers, security system, alloy wheels, roof rails and fog lights. The EX also adds a second-row "Plus-One" removable seat to increase the passenger capacity to eight. The third row utilizes a "magic seat" that disappears into the floor with one easy motion. A rear-seat DVD entertainment system with a 9-inch screen is available on the EX. Optional leather seating includes heated front seats, a power liftgate and a power moonroof.

The Touring trim features a premium audio system with 7-speakers and subwoofer, a programmable multi-information display with trip computer, a 2-position memory power driver's seat, power adjustable pedals, mirror memory, premium alloy wheels, corner and backup sensors, automatic headlights, navigation system with voice recognition, a rearview camera and Bluetooth communications system.

Summary
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is recalling certain 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey vehicles manufactured June 23, 2004, through September 4, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the fuel pump strainer cover may deteriorate allowing fuel to leak out.

Consequence
A fuel leak increases the risk of a fire.

Parts to permanently repair the affected vehicles are not currently available. Honda will notify owners with an interim letter during April 2014. A second notice will be mailed to owners when the remedy becomes available, currently expected to be during the summer of 2014. Any vehicles that are currently leaking from the fuel pump cover will get a replacement, original cover. All vehicles, including those receiving the interim repair, will get an improved cover when they are available. Owners may contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009. The recall numbers associated with this campaign are JD9 (inspection and/or preliminary part replacement) and JE0 (final parts replacement).

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
