Fully electric; maneuverable; gasoline-like performance ; easy to park
The heart of the Fit EV is its all electric drivetrain. Unlike hybrid cars, the Fit EV is fully electric meaning that drivers will never have to fill it up at the pump. Its electric motor makes 123 horsepower, which is on par with most gasoline engines found in subcompacts. Electric motors make lots of torque and the Fit EV gets the benefit of 189 foot-pounds. This means that the little car gets off the line with surprising punchiness for something so environmentally friendly. Crucially, the Fit EV has a range of around 80 miles. While that may not be enough to travel from state to state, it should be more than enough for daily trips around town as well as most people's daily commute.
The Fit EV shares much of its interior layout with the standard Fit, meaning that there is surprising amounts of room for both front and rear passengers considering the car's exterior dimensions. New environmentally friendly materials upholster the car and tasteful metal accents help give the Fit EV an upscale feel. A unique digital instrument cluster helps monitor power usage and even offers feedback through a scoring system, to help drivers use as little energy as possible.
The Fit EV also comes packed full of upscale amenities, especially for a car of its size. A voice-activated navigation system comes standard with the car and is displayed in a tidy 6.5-inch screen set in the dashboard. Climate control is automatic with various functions enabling drivers to save power. Bluetooth connectivity is also standard, allowing for streamed phone calls or music over the 6-speaker MP3 capable stereo. The stereo also offers an USB port.
Honda knows that charging an electric vehicle at home is probably a new experience for most of its customers and they have taken steps to make the process as painless as possible. The Fit EV comes with a remote that can be used to initiate charging from up to 100 feet away, once the vehicle has been plugged in. The remote can also turn on the climate control while the car is charging, allowing the vehicle to get to a comfortable interior temperature without using its batteries. The car also allows drivers to automatically schedule charging in order to maximize battery life and ensure that it is fully charged and ready to use when needed.
The Fit EV is a brand-new electric car from Honda. It's based heavily on the standard Fit subcompact, but in place of a gasoline engine, is a fully electric drivetrain. Honda has previously sold alternative fuel vehicles in limited markets and the Fit EV follows in this tradition with sales slated to start this coming year in Oregon and California.
The Fit EV is available only for lease. The Fit EV will compete mostly with the Nissan Leaf, and to a lesser extent several hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt.
