Pros

Easier to park than full-size trucks; impressive fuel economy in the 4-cylinder version; less expensive than full-size trucks; enough capability for casual pickup needs; specialized models for off-roading and towing

Value Writeup

The Canyon is between compact and mid-size among pickup trucks, and is a very useful size for city-dwellers as it's small enough to easily fit into just about any standard parking spot. The new V8 engine for 2009 fills a void in the compact-truck arena and turns the Canyon into a very capable, exciting-to-drive muscle truck. Price might be its most attractive attribute, though; comparably equipped, even with the V8, it comes priced several thousand dollars below a full-size truck.

Model Highlights

The Canyon comes in three different cab styles--regular, extended, and crew--with two different bed lengths and three different engines. The base engine for most Canyon models is a 185-horsepower, 2.9-liter in-line 4-cylinder, while a 242-horsepower, 3.7-liter in-line 5-cylinder engine is optional on most models and standard on crew cab 4WD models. Newly optional on extended cab and crew cab models is a 5.3-liter V8 making 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. Both the 4- and 5-cylinder engines get improved fuel economy for 2009, with 4-cylinder models rated up to 25 mpg highway.

Most 4-cylinder models come with a 5-speed manual transmission; a 4-speed automatic is optional on those and standard on all other Canyons. A shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel drive system is optional across the model line, and three different rear-end gear ratios are offered, depending on the need of the owner. With the V8, the Canyon can tow up to 6,000 pounds and accelerate to 60 mph in less than seven seconds.

Regular and crew cab models come with a 6-foot cargo bed while the bed on crew cab models measures just over 5-feet long. Bed walls are said to be taller than those of some rivals, and both beds come with a tailgate that can be locked in a 55-degree position to line up with the top of rear wheel wells for longer objects.

Crew cab models are configured for those who plan to carry passengers in back on a regular basis; the full-size back seat can accommodate three adults, and its split 60/40 such that it can be folded down and used as a cargo shelf otherwise.

Several packages bring extensive appearance and suspension changes to the Canyon to make it more appealing for specific types of pickup buyers. For off-road enthusiasts, there's the Z71 Off-Road package, which includes a high-stance suspension, torsion bars, off-road tires, a locking rear differential, wheel flares, and jounce bumpers. Also looking the part for street-racer types is the ZQ8 package; available only on V8 versions in extended or crew cab styles, the ZQ8 brings a "slammed" appearance from a stiffer sport suspension that rides about an inch lower than standard models. Painted aluminum wheels, low-profile sport tires, and a power-steering cooler are also included. Those who do any towing should opt for the Z85 heavy-duty suspension.

The Canyon can otherwise be equipped with as much luxury you want, ranging from the stripped-down Work Truck models up to the very well-equipped SLT, which adds items like a rear sliding window, leather upholstery and chrome-clad wheels. Hear-curtain side airbags that cover front and rear outboard rows are a recommended option for anyone who wants to have the most protection possible.

Model News

For the first time, a V8 is available on Canyon extended cab and crew cab models, while fuel-system improvements for the in-line 4- and 5-cylinder engines have improved fuel economy. The Canyon's brake system has been improved to match, and electronic stability control is now standard on all trims.

A revised ZQ8 sport suspension is available with the V8; it offers a "slammed" appearance, includes low-profile sport tires and has been lowered by about an inch. The Z71 Off-Road package has also been reconfigured to have a higher stance, with larger wheels and tires for better maneuverability off-road. Even base Work Truck models feature larger 16-inch wheels, with new 17- and 18-inch designs available. Body-side trim has been reconfigured through the model line, and two new colors--Navy Blue and Aqua Blue Metallic--join the palette.

Summary
GM IS RECALLING 27,188 MY 2009 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE HYBRID, ESCALADE ESV, AND ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SUBURBAN, TAHOE, TAHOE HYBRID, AND COLORADO; AND GMC YUKON, YUKON HYBRID, YUKON XL, AND CANYON VEHICLES. THE FUEL SYSTEM CONTROL MODULES MAY HAVE A CONDITION IN WHICH AN ADHESIVE SEPARATION OF THE ROOM TEMPERATURE VULCANIZING (RTV) SEAL BETWEEN THE SEAL AND THE HOUSING MAY ALLOW WATER TO SEEP INTO THE MODULE.

Consequence
WATER IN THE MODULE COULD CAUSE A SHORT OR OPEN CIRCUIT, ILLUMINATION OF THE SERVICE ENGINE SOON LAMP, SETTING OF DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES OR THE ENGINE MAY BE HARD TO START, MAY NOT START OR MAY STALL INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW FUEL SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE MAY 18, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339, CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 AND GMC AT 1-866-996-9463 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Summary
GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2011, CHEVROLET COLORADO, GMC CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006, ISUZU I-280/I-350, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2008, I-290/I-370, REGULAR CAB VEHICLES AND EXTENDED CAB VEHICLES WITHOUT A REAR SEAT AND EQUIPPED WITH A FRONT 60/40 SPLIT BENCH SEAT. THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS. THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT IS NOT ACCESSIBLE AND THE OWNER MANUAL DOES NOT INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING HOW TO USE THE TOP TETHER.

Consequence
BOTH NHTSA AND GM DISCOURAGE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A FRONT SEAT. NEVERTHELESS, THERE ARE INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAY REQUIRE PLACEMENT OF A CHILD IN A RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT CENTER SEATING POSITION OF THIS VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT OFFER A REAR SEAT. LACK OF ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR AND A LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS AS TO HOW TO USE IT, MAY RESULT IN IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT. IMPROPER INSTALLATION OF A CHILD RESTRAINT CAN RESULT IN A REDUCTION IN THE RESTRAINTS PERFORMANCE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH AND AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY OR DEATH TO THE CHILD SEATED IN THE RESTRAINT.

DEALERS WILL CUT A HOLE INTO THE BACK PANEL TRIM COVER TO ALLOW ACCESS TO THE TOP TETHER ANCHOR FOR THE FRONT CENTER SEAT POSITION AND WILL PROVIDE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION AS TO USE IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE FOR THIS CAMPAIGN. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727 OR VISIT GM'S WEBSITE AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

Summary
GM IS RECALLING 185,903 MODEL YEAR 2004-2009 COLORADO, GMC MODEL YEAR 2009-2004 CANYON, MODEL YEAR 2006 I-280, I-350, MODEL YEAR 2007-2008 I-290, AND I-370, PASSENGER VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, HAWAII, LOUISIANA, MISSISSIPPI, NEVADA, NEW MEXICO, PUERTO RICO, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS AND UTAH. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A BRAKE LAMP SWITCH THAT MAY NOT WORK AS DESIGNED DUE TO CONTAMINATION IN THE SWITCH.

Consequence
THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE SIMULTANEOUS LOSS OF ALL BRAKE LAMPS OR CAUSE ALL OF THE BRAKE LAMPS TO STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY. BOTH OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD FAIL TO WARN OTHERS OF THE DRIVER'S INTENTIONS AND COULD LEAD TO A VEHICLE CRASH.

DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE NECESSARY COMPONENTS AS SPECIFIED IN THE RECALL BULLETIN FREE OF CHARGE. GM ANTICIPATES THAT PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY FEBRUARY 2010. A SPECIAL COVERAGE FOR VEHICLES REGISTERED IN ALL OTHER STATES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
