Four-seat supercar is Ferrari's largest-ever model; usable trunk; F1-derived upgrades
Like all Ferraris, the engine in the 612 Scaglietti is the highlight. The 6.0L V12 has 48 valves and can churn out 540 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque, with its 6-speed automated manual transmission with paddle shifters. The updated F1 SuperFast transmission, which is also found in the 599 GTB, is capable of shifting in 100 milliseconds.
The unmistakable sound of a Ferrari engine is matched by its performance. Even though it's a 2+2 sports coupe, the 612 Scaglietti still turns in a 0-62 time of 4 seconds, with a top speed of 199 mph. Speeds like that come at price at the pump, however. The 612 achieves 9 mpg city and 15 mpg highway.
One of the few significant additions for this model year is a glass roof that extends from windshield to rear window, so all four passengers can feel the sun on their faces. The "electrochromic" panel, as Ferrari calls it, has three tint settings, in case you'd like a little less of the open-top feel.
The audio system was designed for the Scaglietti's cabin, with voice recognition and steering wheel controls. It has a 20GB hard disk for storing music, and can learn from your listening preferences and make selections for you based on tone and rhythm analysis. The disk also stores the GPS navigation system.
There are few new additions to the 612 Scaglietti for 2009, and it does now have the F1 SuperFast paddle-shift transmission, for faster shifts, and the "manettino" switch on the steering wheel, which adjusts stability controls. Ceramic brakes and a full glass roof are now standard. The Scaglietti is the first to take advantage of Ferrari's new customization program, Ferrari Atelier.
The largest Ferrari doesn't have the largest price, but it is substantial at $318,000 to start. What that buys, though, is exclusivity, a daily-driver Ferrari that fits four adults, top-of-the-line performance and a truly luxurious interior.
