Formula 1-derived performance; go-fast Ferrari design; luxurious interior and advanced safety systems
In Ferrari model nomenclature, every character has a meaning: the 599 represents the displacement of the engine (5.99 liters); the GTB stands for "Gran Turismo Berlinetta," an homage to some of the finest cars in Ferrari's history; and Fiorano is the name of the factory test track in Maranello, Italy.
That track is where Ferrari puts its engine through their paces, and the 599 GTB is no different. It has a front mid-mounted 6.0-L V12 engine that can put out 612 hp and 433 lb-ft of torque. It's mated to a 6-speed transmission that can be configured as a traditional manual or as paddle shifters behind the steering wheel, a technology borrowed from Ferrari's Formula 1 team. The automated manual can move between gears in as little as 100 milliseconds.
Ferrari's "manettino" button made its debut on the 599 GTB. This steering-wheel-mounted switch allows the driver to choose settings for suspension, traction control, stability control and shifter systems. With optimum settings and a practiced driver, the car is capable of 205 mph and 0-62 in 3.7 seconds.
The 599 GTB has a luxurious interior with lots of standard seating and surface options. Every bit of the car can be tweaked to the owner's liking, though, and Ferrari divides its customization program into four areas: Racing and Track, Exteriors and Colors, Interior and Materials, and Equipment and Travel.
Racing options include carbon ceramic brakes, four-point harnesses, and a roll bar. Interior options include a carbon-fiber steering wheel with LED rev display, along with a carbon fiber trim kit. Daytona-style seats, navigation system, parking assist and an 11-speaker Bose audio system are available on the long list of options as well.
The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano remains unchanged for 2009, with the same front-mounted 6.0L V12 and 6-speed paddle-shift transmission. The exterior also remains the same, which some find classically stunning while others see a need for an update.
When it comes to Ferrari, you get what you pay for, which in either case is a lot. The aerodynamic design, 612-hp engine and 205-mph top speed of the 599 GTB don't come cheap, nor does the customizable leather interior with carbon fiber trim. The 599 GTB Fiorano has a base price of $302,000, with options adding several thousand dollars more.
