Model Highlights

Two different powertrains are available on the Journey for 2010, and both offer a distinct choice of price and fuel efficiency versus power and refinement. Three different trim levels are available: SE, SXT and R/T. The base SE comes with a 173-horsepower, 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic transmission; the well-equipped SXT and sporty, top-of-the-line R/T models come with a 235-horsepower, 3.5L V6 engine and 6-speed automatic with AutoStick, which allows manual gear selection if desired. With the 4-cylinder engine, the Journey is rated at 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway in the EPA fuel economy cycle.

All Journey models have standard front-wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive system is

available on SXT and R/T. The system sends most power to the front wheels except when power is needed at the back wheels for traction. Between 25 and 65 mph, some power is also sent to the rear wheels to enhance handling and stability.

The Journey's versatile interior is configured so as to carry up to seven people plus cargo or a combination thereof. Five-passenger seating is standard on all models, with the 3-row, 7-passenger layout available on upmarket SXT and R/T models. In the third row, which is elevated slightly above the level of the first and second row, Dodge says that the Journey allows two inches more head room than its leading competitors, and the back two rows can be folded down to allow a huge cargo floor.

The Journey's back doors open 90 degrees to allow easy entry and loading access, and the second-row seat has a child-seat-friendly feature that allows it to slide forward or rearward a total of 4.7 inches to bring children closer or to allow more legroom for adults. Access is made even easier through the Dodge's Tilt 'n Slide feature on third-row models, which allows the second row to tilt upward and slide forward.

A clever, optional Flip 'n Stow in-seat storage system under the front passenger seat includes a fold-down front passenger seat and has enough space to store a planner or other small items with the seat down in place, and two other in-floor bins located just behind the front seats can hold a dozen 12-ounce beverage cans out of sight. The bins have latched lids and removable liners. Third-row models feature yet another similar covered compartment behind the rearmost seats.

The Journey's car-like underpinnings include a 4-wheel independent suspension with a multi-link rear suspension layout for good handling and a smooth ride. Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with hydraulic boost are standard across the model line, along with an electronic stability control that includes a Trailer Sway Control mode to help prevent the loss of stability while towing. Front seat-mounted side airbags are standard, along with supplemental side-curtain bags that provide head protection to all three rows. The 2010 Journey has earned the highest possible rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Noteworthy options include a UConnect hands-free calling system, a rechargeable flashlight, 3-zone climate control, a sunroof, a trailer-tow package, the Parkview backup camera, and an entertainment package that includes a navigation system, 9-inch second-row video entertainment screen, wireless headphones, 368-watt audio, and six speakers with a subwoofer.

Model News

Following its introduction in 2009, the 2010 Dodge Journey sees no major changes, though the 2.4L 4-cylinder is only available on SE trim. Remote keyless entry is standard, as are active head restraints on first-row rear seats, and the video screen has grown from eight inches to nine. Dark slate monochrome is a new exterior color.

Value Writeup

Interior packaging is the 2010 Dodge Journey's strength; its interior, with space for up to seven and numerous useful storage bins, could prove very useful for growing families. At the same time, its price doesn't break the bank, especially looking at the affordable base model. The SXT and R/T models offer a sophisticated interior arrangement and a fair number of luxury features and conveniences at a very competitive price. Configured for on-road driving, the Journey also promises peppy performance and good handling with the V6 and all-wheel drive.

Pros

Versatile interior configuration for people and cargo; ride quality; very affordable base model.

Summary
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2009-2016 Dodge Journey vehicles manufactured July 31, 2007, to November 12, 2016. After exposure to cold temperatures, the power steering return hose may rupture at engine start-up causing a loss of power steering assist.

Consequence
A loss of power steering assist may require extra steering effort, especially at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering return hoses, steel tubes, and power steering oil cooler, free of charge. The recall began on May 24, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S08.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Summary
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 Dodge Journey vehicles manufactured June 29, 2007, to June 17, 2010, and 2008-2010 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country vehicles manufactured January 26, 2007, to June 17, 2010. Road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Consequence
If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will modify the ignition switch, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is L25. Note: This is an expansion of recall 11V-139.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
