Pros

Impressive payload and tow ratings; proven design; powerful Duramax diesel option; value.

Model Highlights

The 2007 Chevrolet Silverado Classic Heavy Duty pickups are available in a wide range of configurations to suit various work purposes, ranging from pulling horse trailers, to working at construction sites, to daily commercial duty.

Three different engines are offered on the HD trucks. A 6.0L V8, making 345 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque, is standard across the HD line, while an 8.1L V8 with 330 horsepower and 450 lb-ft is optional, along with a new version of the 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V8, making 360 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. The diesel comes with an intake-air heater to help reduce smoke and emissions when the engine is cold.

Depending on the model, the engines can be mated with a five-speed manual transmission, four-speed Hydra-Matic automatic, or six-speed Allison automatic. The five-speed manual is offered on all 2500HD models but optional only on some of the 3500 variants.

The HD trucks are available in three box lengths, three cab styles, and in 2WD or 4WD for each. 2500HD models pair the crew cab with either the short or long box, while the regular cab comes only with the long box and the extended cab comes with either the standard or long box. 3500 models come only with the long box, in regular cab, extended, or crew cab variants.

The 2500 models can haul payloads of up to 4,058 pounds, while 3500 models can take payloads of up to 5,511 pounds.

3500 models come in SRW (single rear wheel) models, along with DRW (double rear wheel) variants that provide improved stability while towing heavy loads. Properly equipped, the DRW model can pull a trailer up to 13,000 pounds with a standard hitch and up to 16,000 pounds with a fifth-wheel hitch.

Like the light-duty Silverado Classic, the HD Silverados vary rather dramatically inside as well, from the very basic Work Truck (WT) trim all the way up to the top LT2 and LT3 equipment levels. The LT3, for example, includes dual-zone automatic climate control, cruise control, leather power seats, steering wheel controls, an overhead console, and a high-end audio system with six-disc changer. Options include some more interior items such as power-adjustable pedals, and a reverse sensing system, but the options list is long and mainly includes serious gear to outfit the HD for duty, such as with skid plates or a snow-plow prep package.

Model News

As with the light-duty Chevrolet Silverado Classic 1500 models, the outgoing version of the HD (heavy-duty) Silverado continues for one more year.

For 2007, the only notable change is that recovery hooks are now standard on all HD models.

Value Writeup

The Heavy Duty versions of the 2007 Chevy "Classic" Silverado, which has been GM's best-selling vehicle, are offered at a substantial savings versus the redesigned versions to be phased in through the year. This makes the Classics a strong value if you don't mind this proven, albeit slightly more conservative, design.

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD 2500/3500 trucks manufactured January 18, 2007, to June 22, 2011, and GMC Sierra HD 2500/3500 trucks manufactured January 22, 2007, to June 21, 2011, and equipped with an auxiliary battery. Owners may unknowingly draw too much current through the vehicle's trailer harness resulting in the melting of fusible link for the auxiliary battery.

Consequence
If the fusible link melts it may come into contact with adjacent components, damage the electrical center cover, the nearby wiring harness conduit and other vehicle components, increasing the risk of a fire.

GM will notify owners and dealers will replace the jumper harness with one that includes a 40 amp inline fuse, and provide the owner with supplemental Owner Manual information, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 14260.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD trucks manufactured November 28, 2006, to August 29, 2008, and 2007-2008 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD trucks manufactured November 27, 2006, to August 29, 2008. The affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.

Consequence
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. GM issued an interim notification to owners on July 27, 2015. The recall began on July 27, 2015. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 15438.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
