Understated, classy styling; standard V8 performance; room for five; impressive standard tech features
The Chevrolet SS is unique in the GM lineup. A rear-wheel-drive sports sedan isn't found elsewhere without upgrading to something in the more up-market Cadillacs. But unlike the Cadillac CTS, the SS gets a powerful V8 engine, standard leather seating, 19-inch wheels, HID headlamps and an integrated navigation with an 8-inch touchscreen display.
Standard features on the Chevrolet SS include a 6.2L V8 engine. It makes 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. The standard transmission is a 6-speed automatic with TAPshift manual override, while a 6-speed manual is available. Push-button start, a limited-slip differential, sport suspension with Magnetic Ride Control and 4-wheel Brembo disc brakes are standard.
The headlamps are HID with automatic dimming, and the wipers are rain-sensing. Navigation comes included with the audio system and is operated through a large 8-inch touchscreen display. SiriusXM satellite radio, a USB port, Bluetooth and nine Bose speakers also come with the audio system. Included with the new OnStar 4G LTE system is Wi-Fi hotspot capability.
Leather-trimmed seats are standard. Those seats are heated and ventilated and power-adjustable. An easy-to read heads-up display projects vehicle speed, audio system information, compass and navigation prompts onto the inside of the windshield. Dual-zone climate control and keyless access are also standard.
Safety features include park assist, Blind Zone Alert, Cross-Traffic Alert, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. Air bags include dual-stage front, side-impact, knee and curtain side-impact.
The rear-wheel-drive Chevrolet SS aims for luxury sport sedans from European manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes. In pursuit of this goal, the SS features understated handsome looks, a standard 415-hp V8 engine, impressive chassis dynamics and a classy leather-covered interior.
Chrysler's 300 SRT8 is rear-wheel drive for similar money, but doesn't come with standard leather seats, navigation, heads-up display or HID headlamps. BMW's 550i offers a powerful V8 in a brilliant rear-wheel drive chassis, but it starts at $19,000 more than the SS.
Bottom line: The Chevrolet SS brings impressive performance and an outstanding standard feature list for less money than the competition.
The Chevrolet SS gets several notable changes for the 2016 model year. The front fascia has received a mild redesign, now incorporating LED fog lamps and a pair of subtle hood vents to aid with cooling. Navigation now comes standard on the SS, while a new set of 19-inch wheels and a dual-mode exhaust round out the changes for this year.
