Retro styling; flexible interior configuration; fuel efficient cargo mover.

Model Highlights

Chevrolet's HHR debuted in 2006 to much enthusiasm among entry-level car buyers, selling over 100,000 units in its first year. The attention-grabbing style features a big chrome grille and a long smoothly curved hood reminiscent of Chevy's 1949 Suburban. The rear tailgate is framed by two small, round taillights, making the HHR the most unique vehicle in Chevrolet's lineup.

The front-wheel drive platform and the two available engines, a 2.2L and a 2.4L four-cylinder, are borrowed from the Cobalt. However, the HHR is aimed at those looking for more style and a more cargo room than the cars provide.

HHR stands for "Heritage High Roof," and it is the high roof that provides ample interior headroom and generous cargo volume. Combined with a very configurable interior, including removable rear seats and a fold-flat front passenger seat, means the HHR is a very versatile passenger and cargo hauler. Captain's style seating allows good visibility and SUV appeal.

The base LS comes with the 2.2L engine and five-speed manual transmission, which can be upgraded to a four-speed automatic. The interior is generously equipped with standard power windows and door locks, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, and cruise control. Remote vehicle start is available, as are antilock brakes with traction control. Music fans can opt for a seven-speaker Pioneer premium sound system with subwoofer.

The uplevel LT trim adds an additional $1,000 to the sticker price, as well as a more responsive suspension and 16" aluminum wheels. An eight-way power-adjustable driver seat becomes standard, and the stereo is upgraded with MP3 playback, automatic volume control, and an equalizer. The 2.4L engine, which puts out 175 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque, is only available on the LT trim as a $650 option. Three 17" aluminum wheel options are also available.

The Premiere Edition Package dresses the HHR LT up in black chrome wheels, smoked headlight lenses, running boards, a rear spoiler, and a leather steering wheel. It's a $995 option. Other notable options on both trims include head curtain side-impact air bags, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and OnStar.

For those looking to haul more goods than people, the HHR can be ordered in a panel configuration. It deletes the rear doors, rear windows, and rear seat, allowing users to stuff 55.6 cubic feet of cargo into the vehicle.

Value Writeup

The 2007 Chevy HHR offers sport utility seating and cargo carrying capability on a small-car platform. Both the base 2.2L Ecotec engine and the 2.4L engine upgrade achieve 30 mpg on the highway regardless of transmission. The 2.4L engine upgrade provides 26 more horsepower for $650.

Model News

For 2007, Chevrolet has introduced a "panel" version of the HHR. This trim deletes the side windows, rear side doors, and the rear seats to provide 55.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the driver and front passenger. GM hopes the Panel HHR will appeal to urban-based companies looking for a small, efficient delivery vehicle.

The rest of the model line-up remains the same as 2006. two new colors, Imperial Blue Metallic and Golden Teal Metallic, are now available. Both engines reported slightly higher horsepower and torque outputs.

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.

Consequence
If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.

General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," o...

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) announced on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. Two weeks later, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Consequence
If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall began on March 10, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
