Model Highlights

Introduced in 2005 as a replacement for the Chevrolet Cavalier, the 2008 Cobalt is in every way a more rewarding car to drive. Based on GM's Delta platform, which also underpins the Saturn Ion, the Cobalt adds a lot of refinements over its Saturn counterpart in both powertrain and chassis tuning. With two engine choices and three trim levels for each of two body styles, the Cobalt also offers buyers a lot of room for personalization.

The standard engine for both the coupe and sedan is a 148-horsepower, 2.2L Ecotec four-cylinder. Choosing the Sport version of either model gets you a 171-horsepower bored-and-stroked 2.4L Ecotec with variable cam timing. Along with impressive performance, you also get a modified sport suspension, and wide 50-series tires on 17-inch wheels. It also comes with four-wheel disc brakes, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, and a large rear spoiler. Optional are leather front bucket seats.

Most buyers are more likely to choose the less performance-oriented versions, but the Cobalt doesn't disappointment here either. The base LS models have a fair amount of standard equipment, including air conditioning with cabin filter, an AM/FM/CD player with an MP3 input jack, a height-adjustable driver's seat, a tachometer, and a rear 60/40 split bench seat with a trunk pass-through

Opting for the LT trim can add body color fascias, power windows, mirrors and door locks, and an upgraded stereo. The top-of-the line Sport trim adds fog lamps, and traction control and still comes in just shy of $20,000.

Model News

For 2008, the Chevy Cobalt has dropped the SS Supercharged coupe and LTZ sedan, and the SS models from 2007 are now called Sport models. In addition head curtain side air bags, XM satellite radio, and a tire pressure monitoring system are standard on all 2008 Chevy Cobalts, and the Sports models get StabiliTrak and OnStar standard. The LT offers a Bright Chrome Appearance Package that includes chrome door handles, chrome grille, body-color front and rear fascias, and fog lights. The Revolution Edition Package is also new on the LT, and adds four-wheel ABS, a rear spoiler, aluminum wheels, and a chrome exhaust tip. Imperial Blue Metallic, Blue Flash Metallic and Slate Metallic are 3 new exterior colors that join the 2008 palette.

Value Writeup

The 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt is well equipped and aggressively priced at just below $14,000. It is one of the few cars in its segment to offer two engine sizes, and its two body styles, three trim levels, and bevy of packages and options offer maximum flexibility for consumers.

Summary
GENERAL MOTORS IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2010 CHEVROLET COBALT AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 PONTIAC G5 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRIC POWER STEERING. THE DRIVER MAY EXPERIENCE A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST THAT COULD OCCUR AT ANY TIME WHILE DRIVING.

Consequence
IF POWER STEERING ASSIST IS LOST, IT WOULD REQUIRE GREATER DRIVER EFFORT AT LOW VEHICLE SPEEDS, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING MOTOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT YET PROVIDED AN OWNER NOTIFICATION SCHEDULE. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438 AND PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668 OR AT THE OWNER CENTER AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.

GM'S RECALL NO. N100023. OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.

Consequence
If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.

General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," o...

Crash Test Note
Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
