Model Highlights

Introduced in 2005 as a replacement for the Chevrolet Cavalier, the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt is in every way a more rewarding car to drive. Based on GM's Delta platform, which also underpins the Saturn Ion, the Cobalt adds a lot of refinements over its Saturn counterpart in both powertrain and chassis tuning. With three engine choices and four trim levels for each of two body styles, the Cobalt also offers buyers a lot of room for personalization.

The standard engine for both the coupe and sedan is a 140-horsepower, 2.2L Ecotec four-cylinder. Choosing the SS version of either model gets you a 170-horsepower bored-and-stroked 2.4L Ecotec with variable cam timing. A supercharged version of the 2.4 is available on the coupe only, and is good for 205 horsepower. This allows the supercharged SS coupe to go from zero to 60 in about six seconds; pretty impressive for a sporty car under $22,000. Along with impressive performance, you also get a modified sport suspension, and wide 45-series tires on 18-inch wheels. It also comes with four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, and a large rear spoiler. Optional are Recaro front bucket seats with plenty of lateral support.

Most buyers are more likely to choose the less performance-oriented versions, but the Cobalt doesn't disappointment here either. The base LS models have a fair amount of standard equipment, including air conditioning with cabin filter, an AM/FM/CD player with MP3 input jack, height-adjustable driver's seat, a tachometer, and a rear 60/40 split bench seat with trunk pass through

Opting for the LT trim can add body color fascias, power windows, mirrors and door locks, an upgraded stereo, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, or cruise control. The top-of-the line LTZ trim adds fog lamps, traction control, ABS, leather seats, and XM radio, and still comes in just shy of $20,000.

Model News

For the 2007 Chevy Cobalt, both the 2.4L and 2.2L engines get a mild increase in power ratings, and automatic-equipped cars now offer GM's optional remote-starting system. All audio systems are now equipped with an auxiliary input jack.

Value Writeup

Chevrolet's 2007 Cobalt starts out at a very attractive $13,125 for either the two-door coupe or four-door sedan. Notable base equipment includes a rear 60/40 split bench seat with trunk pass through, tilt wheel, a programmable driver information center with outside temperature readout, and a four-speaker audio system with auxiliary input for a portable MP3 player. There are numerous trim levels and option packages available for nearly any entry-level consumer.

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) announced on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. Two weeks later, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.

Consequence
If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. The recall began on March 10, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Summary
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.

Consequence
If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.

General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," o...

Results based on a 35 MPH frontal crash and 38.5 MPH side crash. Results are reported in a range of one to five stars, with five stars indicating the best crash protection for vehicles within the same weight class. This test used driver and passenger belts and airbags.

NHTSA Rollover Rating

Rollover Note
The Rollover Resistance Rating is an estimate of your risk of rolling over if you have a single vehicle crash. It does not predict the likelihood of that crash. The Rollover Resistance Rating utilizes a "fishhook" maneuver which is a series of abrupt turns at varying speeds to see how "top-heavy" a vehicle is. The more "top-heavy" the vehicle, the more likely it is to roll over. The lowest rated vehicles (1-star) are at least four times more likely to roll over than the highest rated vehicles (5-stars).
