Limited production guarantees exclusivity; fully loaded with luxury items; a solid Bentley that offers the best of British motoring
The Brooklands engine, a 6.8L V8, puts out 530 hp and 774 lb-ft of torque. It has changed little in nearly half a century. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual shifting capability, it has a top speed of 184 and a 0-60 time of 5 seconds -- surprising numbers for a car that weighs nearly three tons and is 213 inches.
The safety systems in the Brooklands come as no surprise, however, and are far more modern than its powerplant. The Bosch electronic stability program includes ABS, electronic brake pressure distribution, traction control, engine drag torque control, hydraulic brake assist and aquaplane detection. Tire pressure monitoring and airbags front and rear are also standard equipment, as is a Park Distance Control system.
The steel monocoque body is quite rigid, especially when it sits atop the sport-tuned suspension. The suspension system is borrowed for the most part from the Azure, but with stiffer springs, anti-roll bars and dampers for better handling.
The interior is standard luxe. There are several leathers and wood veneers to choose from, but if those aren't enough, Bentley Mulliner offers more choices and a color-matching service. A hide trimmed multi-function steering wheel is standard, as is a memory function that links the steering wheel, mirror and seat settings. All seats are heated with lumbar support and electronic adjustments, but only the front seats have the massage feature. And, of course, two umbrellas are fitted in the luggage compartment for unexpected showers.
While a retractable Flying "B" and custom-matched exterior paint are nice, the carbon ceramic brake upgrade is probably most worth the extra dollars. Sound system options include an MP3 player and 6-CD changer, and a reverse camera can be linked to the satellite navigation screen.
Only 550 examples of the Brooklands will ever be built, so place your order now. The 6.8L V8 that carries the nearly 6000-lb behemoth from 0-60 in about 5 seconds is based on decades-old architecture, but the current incarnation is the most powerful to come out of Crewe. New technology abounds, too, with Bluetooth connectivity, power heated massaging seats and sport-tuned automatic ride height control.
The value to be found in a $340,990 price tag is in the standard features, such as the afore-mentioned heated, massaging seats, 20-inch wheels, a choice of interior wood veneers, satellite navigation, aquaplane detection, two valet keys and two umbrellas. The EPA rated fuel economy at 10 mpg in the city and 14 mpg on the highway. Do look for a smooth, powerful ride wherever you drive.
