Exclusivity; classy, timeless design; elegant interior; tremendous torque of twin-turbo V8; surprisingly deft handling
The Arnage is offered in three different models: Arnage R, RL and T. The R and RL models are powered by a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8, making 450 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque, while the Arnage T performance model has a 500-hp, 737-pound-feet version of the same engine. Both are mated to a 6-speed ZF automatic transmission and deliver their power to the pavement through rear-wheel drive.
The performance-oriented Arnage T can be driven with a verve that belies its hefty 5,700-pound curb weight, although fuel economy for the RL ranks at a low 9 mpg city, 15 highway. The T can accelerate to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds and go on to a top speed of 179 mph.
Ornate would be the best word to describe the interior. In any of the trims, the Arnage comes with abundant chrome trim and hand-cut wood veneers, and whether in standard-length R and T or extended-length RL versions, the Arnage has plenty of cushy seating space in front and in back. The Arnage's interior is designed for those who have the driving done for them and ride along in the back seat; highlights in addition to all the traditional luxury features include wooden seatback tables, a cocktail cabinet with flask and custom umbrellas for four.
A Final Series model of the Arnage incorporates the T's performance upgrades plus a host of appearance extras, including body-colored headlamp bezels, a dark-tinted grille, special side vents and a retractable hood ornament. Inside, it gets additional chrome for speaker grilles, door sills, and other trim, plus contrast stitching for the leather upholstery, which can still be chosen in about 25 colors.
Very little changes for 2009 on Bentley's biggest, most luxurious sedan. Carbon ceramic brakes are a new option and dark-stained Vavona wood is newly available. The "Naim for Bentley" 1100-wat audio system, is optional. Also, the Final Series Arnage, a special edition, celebrates the last year for the Arnage model line with a run of just 150 cars.
The Arnage has the conservative look and feel of traditional big Bentley sedans, while Bentley's less-expensive Continental Flying Spur has a more modern style. The mammoth twin-turbo V8 engine in the Arnage is one of the smoothest, most powerful engines in the prestige luxury class, and its tremendous torque allows seemingly effortless acceleration and passing. Exclusivity and status is likely the primary reason for considering the Arnage, though; because Bentley only sells a few hundred Arnages annually in the U.S., you're not likely to see another.
