Very quick acceleration; confident high-speed performance; long list of active-safety technologies and innovations; comfortable, quiet ride; a back seat roomy enough for adults
The 2014 BMW 6-Series includes Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe models, and while they span a wide range of equipment, features and performance, these three body styles all essentially have the same familial look.
640i models are powered by a 3.0L turbocharged in-line 6-cylinder engine, making 315 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, while 650i models get a 4.4L V8. Both offer either a 6-speed manual gearbox or 8-speed Sport Automatic transmission. With either transmission, the 650i Coupe can get to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, and to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.
M6 models are powered by an M Twin Power engine--a twin-turbo V8 that's the same size as that in the 650i but developing 560 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. It's also paired with a 7-speed M Double Clutch automated gearbox, as well as an Active M Differential and special wheels, brakes and suspension to suit the stronger performance. A 6-speed manual transmission is new to the M6 lineup, and a no-cost option; it offers seamless automatic rev-matching for downshifts in Efficient or Sport modes, while Sport+ mode requires the driver to mind his or her own revs.
The 6-Series models offer a number of innovative chassis technologies that make them handle like smaller models, and respond crisply yet ride smoothly. The standard Dynamic Damper Control works with the double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear axle to adapt to different driving surfaces and control body motion, while Active Roll Stabilization further helps keep cornering flat. Integral Active Steering is also on offer, with a steerable rear axle helping make the 6-Series models feel shorter in tight, quick maneuvers.
6-Series Coupes follow in the vein of classic grand-touring 2+2 luxury models. Sporty bucket seats up front accommodate even very tall drivers in comfort, with good lateral support, too. In back there are two small positions, accented by a trim line that wraps around those and the entire interior. Meanwhile, Convertible versions offer a smooth power-operated fabric soft top. As for Gran Coupe models, they're almost sedans, with four doors and about 4.4 inches of additional length overall--with most of it going to additional rear legroom. BMW calls the Gran Coupe's seating layout '4+1,' referring to the four roomy outboard seats with one much smaller middle position in back.
All three models have a driver-oriented cockpit layout inside, with a swept-across style to the instrument panel and a clean look afforded by BMW's iDrive controller system, which wraps in a number of ancillary controls that might otherwise have their own separate buttons. A black-panel instrument cluster is said to combine the traditional sports-car look with modern display technology. BMW's iDrive has its own high-definition 10.2-inch wide screen at the center of the dash, and iDrive is now offered in its latest version, 4.2. On the outside, adaptive xenon headlamps are standard, while adaptive LED headlamps are optional. There are also LED accent rings for the parking lights, running lamps and directional indicators.
Even base 640i models have rain-sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, Dakota leather upholstery, 3-stage heated seats, power front seats with driver memory settings, dynamic cruise control, automatic climate control, Comfort Access keyless entry, a rearview camera system and Park Distance Control. The standard sound system in 640i and 650i models has nine speakers, with HD Radio and auxiliary inputs, while the premium system upgrades to 12 speakers and a digital amplifier. With the Luxury Seating Package, you add front ventilated seats plus an active fatigue reduction system.
Other noteworthy options include a BMW Night Vision system with pedestrian recognition, a Head-Up Display that projects information onto the windshield, and a new Top View camera system with Side View, so help see the area around the vehicle when parking or maneuvering in very tight spaces at low speed. A Driver Assistance Package brings a host of active-safety features, including Automatic High Beams, Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, the camera system, a Parking Assistant and the Head-Up Display.
These 2-door Coupe Convertible and 4-door Gran Coupe models enter the 2014 model year with a number of small changes and several new models.
One of those new models is a new 2014 6-Series Convertible Frozen Brilliant White Edition, which has special Frozen Brilliant While Metallic exterior matte paint, plus Frozen Black wing mirror caps, a black BMW kidney grille and 20-inch bi-color Ferric Gray and gloss-turned M Performance alloy wheels. The new model is limited to 100 copies and is offered in rear-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive (xDrive) models. Also included are Black Nappa leather upholstery, Gray Poplar wood trim and a black soft top and all the items from the M Sport Package and Executive Package are added, with xDrive models also getting the items from the Cold Weather Package.
The other two models in the lineup this year are the M6 Gran Coupe, essentially wrapping in all the high-performance hardware and 560-horsepower turbocharged V8 of the M6 Coupe and Convertible, and the new 650i xDrive version of the Gran Coupe. Across all M6 models, a new 6-speed manual gearbox is available at no extra cost and M Carbon Ceramic Brakes are available.
Throughout the entire lineup, the 2014 6-Series models get the latest version of iDrive, BMW's in-dash, controller-based interface.
The 2014 BMW 6-Series continues BMW's tradition of high-speed grand-touring models by laying down the fundamentals in a capable-handling Coupe, Convertible, or 4-door Gran Coupe model, then offering a long list of high-tech enhancements that can improve performance. Meanwhile, the Gran Coupe is an unusual offering, with the sleek roofline of a coupe and all the performance of the 2-door 6-Series models, complemented by four doors and enough rear-seat space for adults. M6 models continue to stun with their over-the-top performance and a dynamic personality that can be dialed in with various settings for all of its electronic controls.
