Classic BMW style at affordable prices; powerful performance with a practical comfortable design; luxury-level standard features
Since the 1-series was introduced in the United States in 2008, BMW's entry-level model is mostly unchanged for 2010. It is still available in three trims, including the 128i, which features a 230-horsepower 3.0L inline-6, and a 135i, which makes use of a 300-horsepower 3.0L inline-6. BMW's active steering is no longer available on the 128i and the optional navigation system now utilizes the automaker's iDrive control system. For 2010, HD Radio has been added as standard equipment.
Since 1975, the 3-Series had been BMW's entry-level car, but when BMW subsidiary MINI made such a big seller out of the MINI Cooper, the 1-Series was introduced to North America in 2008 to slot nicely just above it. It's a stylish coupe with an iconic style that competes directly with the Audi A3 and Volvo C30.
The 1-Series gives first-time buyers easy access to a great tradition, and is the only vehicle in its class featuring rear wheel drive, a 50/50 weight balance, a longitudinally-mounted engine and an advanced aluminum multilink suspension. MSRP starts at $29,000. Mileage is estimated at 18 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
The 2010 BMW 1-Series comes in two trims, the base 128i and the 135i, and both are available as either a hardtop coupe or a convertible. The 128i is powered by a naturally-aspirated 3.0L inline-6 DOHC engine making 230 hp at 6500 rpm and 200 pound-feet of torque at 2750 rpm. The 135i utilizes a twin-turbocharged version of the same 3.0L inline-6 and makes 300 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 300 pound-feet of torque at 1400-5000 rpm.
Both engines feature BMW's advanced electronic throttle control and Double-VANOS variable valve timing. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard on each trim, while a 6-speed Steptronic automatic with paddle shifters is available as an option. Both are rear wheel drive only. Both the 128i and 135i are also offered as a convertible with a fully automatic soft top with heated rear glass and integrated defroster.
Standard safety features on all 1-Series cars include run-flat tires with a tire pressure monitor, stability control, traction control, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes with dynamic brake control and brake drying, adaptive brake lights, dual-stage front air bags, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and programmable daytime running lights.
The 128i comes loaded with standard exterior features, including chromed exhaust tips, 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing windshield wipers, dual power heated mirrors and halogen fog lamps. Inside, 8-way adjustable front seats with 2-way headrests are standard, as are power windows and locks, leatherette upholstery, a leather-wrapped tilt/telescopic steering wheel with dynamic cruise and audio controls and split fold-down rear seats. All 128i coupes come with a power moonroof, automatic climate control with individual user recall settings and a 10-speaker CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input jack.
The 135i adds 18-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, xenon adaptive headlights with auto leveling, a rear spoiler and an aerodynamic kit.
Options and packages available include a Sport Package, which adds performance wheels, sport suspension and sport seats. The Premium Package includes auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, power front seats with driver memory, wood and aluminum interior trims, a universal garage door opener and a choice of four interior leathers. Stand-alone options, such as heated front seats, navigation with iDrive, premium sound and satellite radio systems and rear park distance control are available. A Cold Weather Package adds a ski bag and heated front seats. On the 135i, the Sport Package includes an 'M' steering wheel.
