Burt Reynolds’ Smokey And The Bandit Trans Am Sold For $480K

You see a Trans Am and it’s hard not to think of Smokey and the Bandit. That film made the car the coolest thing around and it also made actor Burt Reynolds a movie star. This was way back in 1977 and all these year later, now 78-year-old Reynolds is in financial trouble and has decided to sell his Bandit Trans Am along with a ton of other memorabilia. The 1977 Pontiac Trans Am Coupe didn’t actually see any time on-screen during filming, but was used for promoting the movie when it was released. It might not have been in the film, but it’s still painted black and gold just like the ones that appeared on-screen with Burt Reynolds and Sally Fields and it has that gold Screaming Chicken painted on the hood. The car was given to Reynolds after they were done with it and as proof, it even bears a gold plaque inside the door stating that it was his personal vehicle. It’s also got a Bandit logo on the door and comes with a title showing that he owned it as additional proof of its history. As for what’s under that Screaming Chicken on the hood, you’ll find a 400-cubic-inch (6.55-liter) V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor and an automatic transmission. You might even be able to outrun a smokey or two even today, but there’s no way you could do it as grandly as Reynolds did in the movie. The expected sale price on the car was between $60,000 and $80,000 so the final $480,000 price had to be a nice surprise for Reynolds and definitely made the car the star of the show. Still, it wasn’t the only piece of memorabilia that was up for auction. There were hundreds of additional pieces including a few more gems from Smokey and the Bandit and Smokey and the Bandit II. His custom Bandit belt took in $15,000 while the black western shirt with red flowers from the second movie sold for $15,625. His red jacket from the sequel went for even more at $35,200. All together the boots, shirt, jackets, art, signed photographs and even trophies from his high school football days sold at Juliens Auctions took in over $2.5 million for Reynolds. The actor is also working on a memoir that is due out next year and hopefully sales from the book along with proceeds from the auction help ease his financial woes.

The Worst Shifter Designs of 2015

Since the early 1960s, we’ve had two kinds of automatic transmission shifters: The column shift and the floor shift in a console (forgetting the pushbutton TorqueFlite on the Plymouth Valiant). The last few years, shifter territory has turned into a Wild West, with manufacturers putting them all over the car, in any number of configurations. All three of these cars are terrific automobiles, but their automatic transmission shifter designs are just plain awful. (more…)
